  • Palpebral reflex: appears from birth in intense light or loud noise. It is a defense movement that consists of closing the eyes, that is, moving the eyelids.
  • Wrist eye: newborns are not yet able to fix their gaze so at the beginning when the head goes to the side the eyes go in the opposite direction.
  • Reflection fotomotor: it is about the reaction of the pupils before the changes of luminosity. When there is little light they dilate and when there are a lot they contract. The observation of this reflex is done to verify the good functioning of the optic nerve.

At the end of the first month the baby will show interest in what surrounds him and will be able to maintain his attention for small moments. Until the second or third month, it is normal for the baby, in his attempts to focus at greater distances than his capacity allows, to cross his eyes and appear to suffer from strabismus. After seven months, he can stare at small objects, begins to perceive depth and becomes capable of following objects that move faster or that have even left his visual field.



At what age do babies see?

The baby’s vision will be fully mature by the time he is two years old. Already at that moment they see as an adult: they distinguish objects of any size or color; they focus at any distance and perceive the depth; and also recognize the objects from a part of these.



It is to be noted that the vision develops little by little and will not be exactly the same from one individual to another. It is considered that as of the first month babies already have a 10% visual acuity, at two years, 80% and at five they will have adult vision.
