What causes diarrhea?

Diarrhea is one of several ways our immune system works to expel any malfunction that is preventing our body from functioning perfectly. The causes can be numerous, and difficult to identify in time: be it food infection, viruses, verminoses or even bacteria, the result is always the same – and the form of treatment as well.

Among the various functions of our gut, one of them is the fluid retention of everything we eat and drink. Besides these liquids, there are in the intestine the liquids that it produces, secretions such as saliva, gastric juice, bile of the liver, juice of the pancreas and other liquids released by the intestinal cells. In addition, our gut also contains solid foods, swallowed air and gases produced by the intestinal flora itself.

In normal situations, faeces have an ideal proportion of solid, liquid and gaseous elements and their release is characteristic: firm but soft consistency. The softness of the stool is directly linked to the amount of fibers and liquids we ingest.

Changes in intestinal transit quickly change the consistency of the stool because, for them to be firm, it is important that they remain in the intestine long enough for the excess fluid to be absorbed. Hence, it does not matter what the trigger: if it was a food or viral infection, all diarrhea is caused by the deficiency of the intestine in absorbing the amount of fluids necessary to maintain the consistency of the feces.

As there is an excess of fluid release by the intestine, it is important to focus on foods that restore the functioning of the intestinal flora. And of course, do not forget to take water frequently to replenish the amount of fluid your body is losing.

What is good for diarrhea? Here are some examples of what to eat in case of diarrhea:

  • Water, coconut water or homemade whey to replenish the lost minerals;
  • Well-cooked vegetables and fruits such as zucchini, potatoes, apples and bananas;
  • Probiotics;
  • Masa porridge;
  • Fermented milk;
  • Black tea, chamomile tea or guava leaf tea.

Remember to avoid greasy foods, eggs, chocolates, coffee and alcohol and stay at rest. In about three or four days you will feel better about diarrhea, ready to resume your activities.

If you are looking for a remedy to stop diarrhea immediately, these home remedies will help you a lot:

Homemade remedy with apple cider vinegar: Mix one to two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar with a glass of hot water and drink the mixture every three hours for a day. After that, drink only in the morning and at night until you feel better. If the taste of vinegar bothers you, you can add honey to the mixture or buy apple cider vinegar capsules.

Home remedy with high strength iodine: this may be a little harder to find, but it is equally effective for apple cider vinegar, but mixed with water, it is much easier to take than the first recipe. Iodine is a potent anti-parasite agent and also rebalances the body’s cells, ideal for those who are very dehydrated with diarrhea.

Home remedy with saffron: This is an easy ingredient to find in the supermarket for a price well into account, and that some people even already have at home to use in recipes. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric in a glass with warm water and drink. If you prefer, you can add honey or yogurt to enhance the taste of the mixture. Use it three times a day until you feel better.

Homemade remedy with cinnamon and ginger: another recipe with ingredients you can find in the pantry itself. Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger and make a tea mixture. Let stand for thirty minutes before drinking.

You can also make use of some probiotic such as kefir or some remedy like bismuth subsalicylate, a good antacid and antidiarrheal. In Brazil, it is marketed under the name Peptozil.

  • If your diarrhea is accompanied by fever and abdominal pain, seek medical advice as soon as possible. It may be a sign of a more serious illness.
  • If your diarrhea exceeds the margin of three to four days, it is also a sign of seeking a doctor.
  • If you have diarrhea frequently, it may be time to do some tests and see if anything is wrong with your gut flora. Look for a doctor.
  • The key to your recovery is the replenishment of water and minerals. Do not forget this and do not eat heavy foods that can worsen your condition.
